The Gam3:

The Earth is changing. The alien invasion brought social upheaval, advanced technology, and an armada of peacekeeping robots. But Alan, a college student pursuing a now-useless degree, cares little about all of this. He has only one thing on his mind: the Game.

A fully immersive virtual reality, the Game appears to be a major part of the invading civilization. Alan can’t wait to play, recklessly diving into the digital universe. Soon though, Alan realizes the Game is anything but simple, and the stakes are higher than he ever imagined.

The Author:

Written by Ephemerality a.k.a. Cosimo Yap a.k.a. Alan. The author is an avid devourer of games, books, web fiction, manga, TV and anime, with far too many dreams. The Gam3 can also be found on RoyalRoadl and Amazon.

Updated biweekly sometime near Monday and Friday. Probably. Bonus chapters unlocked with Patreon support.

I started this when it wasn’t with a number named followed. Then I stopped. Now I back. Only the many many knowings don’t remember.

Just want to say, this reminds me of the matrix, but in reverse and on a galactic scale.

    Loving your work so far!

I love the writing style, it’s very fluid and readable. Borrowing heavily from anime (protagonist with a “must get stronger” mindset, powers that keep unfolding and becoming more impressive, etc) is a very nice touch, which is usually executed poorly but you managed to nail. I a mild issue with how long it’s taken until side-characters started getting slightly more fleshed out, but that is obviously starting to get remedied, and doesn’t matter much when the world building has a definite flair to make it a non-issue for large parts. It is kind of ridiculous how much the character is the stereotype of the basement dweller gamer – obsessively min-maxing, lacking social skills, no sex drive, no friends, no love interest, et cetera… but this just adds space for him to grow, and is part of the naive YA vibe the story has so far, and avoids the downfall of many such stories (badly written inorganic romance plots where the lead ends up with the first available member of the opposite sex).

Just wanted to note that the hyperlinks to Royalroad, Amazon and your Patreon are really hard to distinguish from normal text.

P.S. Are you trying to kill yourself with those Patreon goals?

How about commissioning some awesome artwork? I always felt it’s a shame that great works don’t abuse the many amazing artists on sites like Deviantart, Artstation, etc. who create tons of fantasy pieces.

  11. Is there a forum, reddit, or similar community location for discussing the story Ephemerality? I haven’t found one, and am pretty surprised that there’s not a TvTropes page for the story yet.

  12. Ben Moore says:

I’d love an RSS or email update when you post a new chapter.. I’ve devoured the first 4 arcs, and am looking forward to seeing where you go in 5

Hey, I can’t wait for book two to release. I stumbled on book 1 a few months ago on Amazon, and have read though it 3 times now. I was about to start again, but decided to check status updates. I haven’t read anything on the site. I don’t think I could take reading a chapter or two at a time! It might kill me!

Honestly, I’ve always been an avid reader, but it was only about a year ago that I began reading the litrpg category. I thoroughly enjoy the category, but I have to say that The Gam3 is extremely well organized, thought out, with a ton of potential. I would ask if you intend to write a side book about one of the other characters from book one in the “main” group, but I’ll wait to see what book two holds!

It really is one of the best books I’ve read that falls into the litrpg category. Great work!

  21. Absolutely loved the audio book. Best LitRPG I’ve come across in a LONG time. Is there any word on whether or not Book 2 will be recorded or a date? Can’t wait to hear more!

Want to say this story is to additive. I will most likely not get much sleep for a while as I will not be able to quite my mind long enough.

I never do this, and very rarly leave reviews. But this is a good book. I grew up reading everything from Herbert, Asimov, AE van vocht, Banks and Reynolds.

This really is a good take on where sci-fi is going and will set a new trend. Well done !

  24. John Doe says:

I just finished listening to book 1 on Audible. I’m ecstatic to see that book 2 is not only “finished” but also available for free online. I whole heartedly approve of this model. Unfortunately I don’t have enough time to read books; so hopefully book 2 is released in audio form soon.

btw, is there an RSS feed for news about thegam3?

  25. AbsolvedJudas says:

I must have read 20-30 lit rpgs in the past couple months and everything about ‘Opening Moves’ perfectly incapsulates the strengths of this genre. I’ve recommended it to my rpg loving friends and family. It’s brilliantly written and doesn’t lose sight of the gaming aspects and frankly improves on the ground work that even the best mmorpgs out there have tried to use. In ten years I would love to play a game that had even one-tenth of the world building aspects that this book has.

  26. Carl says:

Loved the book, have 100’s of books in my library by many different authors… this one does stand out from the rest… really loved the hole idea of the book… thought it might be a bit of a stupid concept but it all made sense! I was really annoyed to find not only the next one unavailable yet and no more by the same author on Audible!

  27. slade says:

I got the audiobook and let me just say, I think it’s a masterpiece! I can’t wait for the sequal and give the author full marks for his performance .

  28. andy paul says:

Cosimo – after listening to the audiobook I keep checking back for the next installment. I REALLY enjoyed listening to it and have in fact done so twice within a few months, I have a big library of audio books and very few get that treatment. When is the next book out!?

  29. Anonymous says:

will there be an audiobook version of Earth’s gambit, once it is released? I started the opening moves audiobook last night (it was the first time I’d even heard of the series), and I have been loving it!

  30. John O says:

Blaise Corvin (Delvers, LLC) recommended The Gam3 on his page as a fan of his series I thought I’d give your book a listen I am about one third of the way through the audiobook and I must say I absolutely love the story thus far! Please convert more to the audiobook format as this is how I am able to enjoy this great series (while I drive & work). Thank you very much for such a great story. Look forward to many more!

  31. Cole says:

Hello, I was just wondering if there is an expected timeframe for the second book. The first one was amazing, and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Thank you!

  35. Tarcha says:

I listened to the audiobook. And have recommended a number of people to get it. Can’t wait for the next book to come out too! Hopefully that will also be an audiobook, but I’m enjoying reading what you’ve done online so far to assuage my need for more 😉

  37. Cody. says:

Book,1 was alsome one best reads ever advanced ordered book,2 and hoping that it a lot better then online book,2 was as it. Was very disappointing missed so much interest possibilities and felt rushed, also way whole hacking done found not to my tast didn’t like it to put it mildly, hope rewrite said did and reason so long to be released. change’s these and oh so many offer’s, as an expensive eBook and 1 being great read I expect a lot at least clear improvements not worsening like did and upgrades like bone marrow and pod upgrades just menchan 2, and plz say done something about how hacking done as long and terrible how was skipped as much as could of that.

  38. Isaac says:

I don’t get much time to read but I do listen to audio books on my 45 minute commute, and boy I gotta say, “The Gam3” was just SO good. I can’t wait for book 2 to be released in audio format!

  39. Geo Mealer says:

Hey, man–so glad to see book 2 hit Amazon. I was starting to worry it’d never come! Got the alert today and smashed the buy button.

  40. Eric Cooley says:

Picked up the first book on kindle unlimited. About 1/2 way through bought both books and their audiobooks. Finished it today. Really looking forward where the 3rd book will go.

Very nice job. First time I’ve come across a system that makes a bit of sense about going virtual. Most… well their buy in is pretty heavy. This makes a bit of sense, and of course later you realize it doesn’t, but still does. 😀 very well done sir.

  41. Just listened to the first 2 books …what a ride! Can t wait for the third. Real attention to details, right level of complexity.

  42. Ken Nderitu says:

  43. Daniel Dodge says:

This has become one of my favorite series. I LOVE the worlds you describe, and I am completely envious of Alan. I’ve been listening to the audio books because I have to drive a lot, and as soon as I finished both books, I immediately went back and listened to the first again. Love the voice actor reading them.

I see you have Book 3 and some of Book 4 on the site, any chance of the audio books being released for those soon?

  44. Mel says:

    Finished book 1 and 2.
I couldn’t stop them down, even popped ear buds in to listen at work. Need more XD

  45. Realllyyy want to pre-order Book 3 on audible. Any chance of getting a pre-order page up? Is the 3rd book coming to audible?

  46. Jack says:

Hello, I was just wondering when book 3 will be complete/published

  47. Steven says:

Is a book 3 in progress? I think this is the best LitRPG sci-fi series out there, and I’ve read many.

  48. Enviroman_TX says:
